Following the flows of seas, rivers, storms, sweat and tears five Shakespearean characters meet real people who reflect on fate, love, envy and revenge.
More than a documentary or ethnographic film, The Book of Water tells
the stories of a cast of characters whose narratives resonate with
Shakespearian undertones. A Belgian couple speaks of their decision to live
life intensely, letting chance play a crucial role, as in the intertwined lives
of Ferdinand and Miranda in The Tempest. Two native Brazilian
Kaxinawa brothers tell the myth of Banu Danana, a girl who refused to follow
the will of her parents, like Shakespeare's Juliette. A mixed-martial arts
fighter tells his story of friendship, envy and jealousy, similar to Othello's
tragic story. An actress performs Hamlet in such a way that her life and
emotions become entangled with Hamlet's dilemma. The Book of Water engages
with the complex and pluralistic origins of Brazilian culture in a series of
vivid reflections on fate, love, friendship, self-determination, and betrayal.
